The Jukebox of My Mind

I have music running through my brain almost all the time. For the most part it is just background music and not unpleasant.

Until a song gets stuck on an endless loop. Over and over and over and over and over. Not the whole song. Just parts of it.

Sometimes it helps to stick the song in someone else's head. I don't know why that works but it does.

I’ve tried putting a new song in its place. One I know all the words to. The stuck song pops back after my substitute song is over.

I read in Real Simple to end the loop by adding some finality to the song. Like singing “Shave and a haircut. Two bits.”That works pretty well for pop songs.

Endless loop of Rob Thomas:”I don’t wanna be lonely no more. (ohh ohhh oh)
I don’t wanna stand for this (whoa whoa ooh)
Shave and a hair cut. Two bits.”
{Silence}
Then I have to make a conscious effort to keep the offending song from creeping back in. It’s a sneaky little bugger.

Unfortunately I don’t have this same success with songs the chorus is performing. I spend the better part of Tuesday and Wednesday trying to get chunks of songs we rehearsed on Monday out of my head. The closer it gets to a concert, the worse it gets. For example, “The Coolin” is now the theme song of my first kiss with J since it was “playing” {on repeat mode} at that moment.

I recently burned a CD of practice files to learn the music for the December concert. This has only exacerbated the issue.

I’m starting to finally master my part but I’m also starting to resent these gosh-darned songs that never end. Especially the ones with goofy lyrics or clonky dissonance in the chords. Luckily I’ve replaced the dreadful “whales swam” lyrics from Pinkham's wack-o "Nativity Madrigals" that tormented me yesterday with the happy holiday tune from “What Cheer?” {I also got it stuck in J's head when I told him the tune in my head switched.}

I guess it’s good to go through life with a running soundtrack. I just wish it shuffled better.

LOL! I LOVE your "wish it shuffled better" comment! Oh, and that Rob Thomas song always gets stuck in my head too! Some songs must lend themselves to getting stuck. :) And I do the same thing to break the cycle in my head, only I end the song and then insert applause in my head...as if to say, "Ok, concert's over, you can stop now" LOL!

I so do this. And anything can set me off. Like right now DH is watching top hit TV songs. Batman is on right now. Guess what I'm going to be singing all day.
